There are a few different ways the internet is approaching this latest DIY craze:
Step 1: Insert rod to hold umbrella in place
Almost everyone is just getting something slightly larger at Home Depot or Lowes and then using flanges or shims to stabilize the umbrella in place
Step 2: Make the base solid
Folks are using concrete, gravel, rocks and pretty much anything they can find
Step 3: Provide some kind of drainage
Either poke holes in the concrete as it settles or use rocks
Step 4: Keep soil from infiltrating
Unanimously people are using landscape fabric to keep soil from falling through
Step 5: Top soil it up
Everyone seems to be using small plants or annuals and those have relatively shallow roots
Here are some pictures to illustrate:
Lest you think table umbrellas are being ignored:
Spray paint a bundt pan and go to town. Oh allysum, you caused me such strife in 2014!
Or you could just buy a pre-made umbrella planter.
A more traditional bundt pan glued unto a lamp base. Not my colors but I dig the design idea!
I believe this is called "retro chic"
Time to get started on yesterday's bundt planter CUTEFYING!
