Time to ogle little homes!

Its that time of year again - Apartment Therapy's Small Home Contest! My interest is always one half voyer - one half inspiration. I currently live solo in a two bedroom apartment but that doesn't mean there isn't space for me to learn.

Check out this studio apartment: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/emilys-brownstone-studio-small-cool-contest-189500 Her entire home is 224sq feet and used to be the living room of a Brownstone in Boston. She has gorgeous windows and a fireplace but is only a few steps up from dorming. Don't get me wrong - I like her place but her furnishings suggest this was the best she could afford.

On the flip side you have this 300sq foot apartment in Chicago: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/leslies-enchanting-sunlight-small-cool-contest-189548 The size difference isn't substantial but the wallpaper and furnishings suggest this chick is "slumming it" for now or has had a downturn in finances. She obviously has an eye for decor.

Then you have folks who gutted their entire house and chose to have this home but still say things like "I am constantly brainstorming how to work around its slanted walls and the awkward spaces they create. There is a lot of wasted space behind furniture, which makes the living area even smaller and feel more closed in." This is my lack of sympathy: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/haleighs-aframe-cottage-small-cool-contest-189067'

Others hired interior decorators to sort out their spaces. These homes are beautiful but the "thrift store" homes couldn't possibly compete against them. Even though the grand prize is $3000, I think AT should have a separate category for professionally designed homes. Winning would offset some of the cost of hiring!
