Hungry: from Starving to Plus-Sized

Crystal, at 14 and starving and then at bottom left at 19 and "plus-sized"
I received Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves a few months ago from Angela at Pretty in Orange. Between the lasik and work I hadn't been able to sit down with a book read for pleasure in months. Yet once I started this book I finished it within two days.

Crystal was probably 20-21 when this book was written but sometimes it reads like a much older woman's memoirs. She was discovered at 13-14 and told she could come to NY and be a bigtime model if she lost 35-40 pounds. She managed to do it then spent years undoing that damage.

Even though the surface tale of a beautiful, starving model turned beautiful, plus-sized model isn't one most people can easily relate to her underlying tale of compulsion, addiction and desire for a place in the world is one easily grasped.

She ocassionally has deep insights into what it means to become smaller in order to appear larger to others. Yet sometimes her ideas are silly and remind you the author is barely an adult, regardless of her challenging career and worldly travel.

I feel like Crystal is in a race against life. Even though she doesn't drink or party, she constantly alludes to the brevity of a model's career. She talks about the importance of exercise over sustenance for a longer life. She lists her average menus. She discusses different types of exercise. I feel as even though she's managed to regain her weight (at one point she says she weighs now what she weighed before the agent discovered her) she's still racing against something intangible.

I'm left Hungry and wanting more.

I'd definitely recommend this book to any woman - after all who hasn't had body issues?
