Hunting for Treasure...or Maybe just rats

There's something about a garage sale that provides insight into a family. You get bored teens watching childhood toys, downsizing older folk selling glasswares and resellers with price tags layered over pricetags. There's usually a story behind a sale.

But if a garage sale can give you a microcosm of an american life - what can an abandoned storage unit provide? Luckily NPR has the answers! In this segment they follow an auctioneer as he sells several storage units over the course of nine hours. He's followed by folks hoping to make a great buy and turn a profit on eBay or craigslist.

The folks interviewed are mostly optimistic and talk about the man who found $40k worth of jewelry or the one who bought Paris Hilton's old locker. Most of them seem realistic and kind of bored though. To be honest - I'd rather read the blog of someone who did this to make a living than go to one of these auctions myself ;)

The segment starts at around 7:30 but is kind of a downer.
