Happy Minimum Wage Increase Day

Chris Rock: Before I started comedy, I used to work at McDonald's making minimum wage. You know what that means when someone pays you minimum wage? You know what your boss was trying to say? It's like, "Hey if I COULD pay you less, I would, but it's against the law."

Minimum wage goes up today so if you were making $5.85/hr yesterday then today you're making $6.55/hr. That's a pretty decent rate increase. If you're still hanging at a minimum wage job next year then you'll be making $7.25. Source

I remember my first "real" job out of college. I was making $9 an hour, living at home and taking the bus to work. I was shocked that I didn't fall under the poverty line and wondering how people managed to own anything or feed anyone on those kinds of wages.

I don't think I could have afforded living at home for $6.55 an hour.

It's terrible isn't it? And to think so many of these people have children to feed too...!

You're right, rent alone would take up over half of the salary. Its no wonder they go into credit card debting hoping to give their children a sense of normalcy :(
